Palwal became the 21st district of Haryana State on 5 August 2008. The district was formally inaugurated by the Hon'ble Chief Minister of the state. Palwal city is the headquarters of the district.

Location

The city is situated at a distance of 60 km from Delhi on the Delhi-Mathura highway (NH-2). The latitude of the town is 28?40' N and longitude is 76? 59' E. It has an average elevation of 195 metres (639 ft). The area of town is 22.10 km sq..

History

The City Palwal got its name from a demon 'Palawasur' who ruled this place during the regin of Pandavas. Palwasur was killed by Balaram, elder brother of of Lord Shri Krishna. In his memory, every year a festival named "Baldev Chhat Ka Mela" is organised in Palwal.

Geography & Climate

Palwal is located in the southern part of Haryana and the western part of India, being a part of the National Capital Region. It shares a geographical boundary with Mewat, Aligarh, Gurgaon, Faridabad and Delhi. National Highway - 2 passes through the Palwal district. Apart from the perennial river Yamuna flowing, a 136 km long Kundli - Manesar - Palwal Expressway is being planned to run through the district.

Alike Delhi, Palwal also has an extreme climate. During the summer months of April (latter half), May, June and July, the temperature is 36 deg C on an average. During the rainy months, majorly in August, the rainfall peaks to 184 mm and temperature is 22 deg C on an average. During the winters, the temperature swings at 15 deg C on an average.
